Bakers acknowledges successful implementation of Mercedes-Benz SA Fleet Owner Workplace Programme
Bakers SA Limited have proudly become the first fleet company to successfully implement The Fleet Owner Workplace Programme, designed by Mercedes-Benz South Africa (MBSA) and their corporate responsibility partner, Corridor Empowerment Project. On Tuesday, 5 August, Bakers hosted an event acknowledging the successful implementation of the programme, which is aimed at assisting fleet owners in addressing holistic health issues by implementing effective support systems based on proven models.
Bakers initiated the programme in 2013, commencing with management being educated on understanding the principles and purposes of HIV and Wellness. Thereafter, the Bakers Wellness and HIV committee was established with the close guidance of MBSA’s Judith Bester. On road shows supporting the initiative, people were tested on general health and voluntary HIV testing was conducted. Equipped with the results of these screenings, a baseline for the programme
was created and a health policy was drafted and reviewed for final implementation.
In his speech at the event, Bakers CE, Abdool Tayob, articulated Bakers’ intention to “serve and uplift humanity which is the employees and especially the drivers of Bakers and on a larger scale, the logistics industry of South Africa.” He continued by reiterating Bakers’ mission to “create an environment whereby all our company stakeholders will maximise the benefits they receive from and the value with which they provide our company.”
With the support of the programme, Bakers has shifted its focus from Primary Health Care to Total Employee Wellness Management. This has included the implementation of a clinic providing medical screening, primary health care, I.O.D management, chronic care management, as well as HIV screening and education.
The Bakers HIV and Wellness policy was signed at the event, signifying Bakers’ commitment to foster a culture of, and corporate strategy encompassing, human-capital development and holistic wellness. The policy statement will be displayed nationally throughout Bakers and awareness of the policy will be high on our agenda. It is our hope that the programme will create HIV awareness, education and prevention, increased HIV testing, and that the wellness clinic will be utilized to the full benefit of our employees.
